Iri ji, also called iwa ji, is the new-yam festival: the harvest is presented and eaten before the old yam is finished, and the rite marks the year. In Abia it is kept at family, village and town level rather than as one state occasion, which is why no single date describes it - the season runs through the harvest months, and each community keeps its own day.
