One of the six Ngwa local governments, on the Enugu-Port Harcourt axis with its headquarters at Okpuala-Ngwa: farming country of yam, cassava, cocoyam and oil palm, kept by village groups rather than a single throne. The Ngwa were administered through warrant chiefs in the colonial Aba Division - the system whose extortion helped set off the Women's War next door - and their public life grew out of markets, schools and local government.
