Abiriba, the Enuda kingdom

Abiriba, Abia, Nigeria

Abiriba is the traditional Enuda kingdom inside the Ohafia local government - "the Small London" - whose foundation the community's own account places in the fourteenth century, and whose traders and artisans are found in markets across Nigeria and West Africa. The Igwa Mang ceremony in this gallery is one of the town's own occasions, photographed at Abiriba. This entry is deliberately short. The community's account of its age grades and its guilds, in its own words, is the record's proper source and it is still to be written here; what the platform can say now is what it has - the kingdom, the town, the traders and the ceremony.
