The Azumini Blue River

Azumini, Abia, Nigeria

The Azumini Blue River joins the Imo River and reaches the Atlantic through Akwa Ibom, and the reference record calls it an ancient slave-trade route, known locally as Mini-Okigo. It is the best-known riverside site in Ukwa East, the local government that calls itself Eastern Oil Land, has its headquarters at Akwete, and borders Akwa Ibom and Rivers States. The river is reached from Aba by the Azumini road, past the roundabout at Azumini-Ndoki, and the two photographs in this gallery are of the water itself. What a visitor finds at the bank - the canoes, the sand, the days the community receives visitors - is the community's to say, and this record does not print a time, a price or a contact it cannot source. The Nwaotam festival kept at Akirika on the first of January is the same local government's other public occasion, and it has its own entry.
